Volunteer Spotlight: Fostering Fascination for Engineering and Beyond
Katie Woland volunteers at the Delaware Museum of Nature and Science because she loves talking to people and generating that same excitement in others. “I think it’s important to foster both curiosity and understanding of science and nature in people of all ages to empower them to make informed decisions and solve challenging problems,” she said.
She enjoys working with the fossil and surface tension kits, especially seeing guests’ fascination when learning how a paper clip can float or understanding various engineering concepts.

“I learn so much every time I volunteer! I’m an engineer, so working with people who are incredibly knowledgeable about many different fields of science has been very rewarding. I’ve learned so much about nature and biology as well as how to better communicate this information to others in a way that allows them to connect with the exhibits and activities,” Katie said.
Katie appreciates the variety of opportunities for volunteers at the museum. “From providing a positive learning environment for the littlest ones in the Nature Nook, to helping out with activities at special events, to getting out a kit to enhance the experience of all of the guests, to providing assistance to those teaching educators new and exciting ways to communicate science concepts to kids, there are a variety of opportunities to make a difference,” she said.
