What are Broader Impacts?

The National Science Foundation (NSF) evaluates grant proposals based on two merit-review criteria: intellectual merit and broader impacts. Broader impacts refer to the ways in which research can benefit society and contribute to desired societal outcomes, such as STEM education, increasing public engagement with STEM, or building partnerships.

How can we help?

Whether it’s sharing your research in a presentation for our guests, working with you to develop an exhibit, or vouchering research specimens in the scientific collection, the Museum is an ideal partner for designing effective broader impacts for NSF and similar grant proposals.

Opportunities include:

  • Reach thousands of local residents through an exhibit or display at the Museum. Small exhibit space is available in the Regional Journey Gallery. Larger exhibit space and areas for hands-on activities are also available.
  • The Research Headquarters showcases short videos and slideshows about local scientific research and STEM careers.
  • The Museum’s scientific collections include some of the largest collections of mollusks, birds, and bird eggs in the country. Our collections are an ideal location to voucher research specimens.
  • If your research includes reaching students in k-12, our programs include summer and school day off camps, scout programs, and family events.
