Meet Shelob, a Chaco Golden Knee Tarantula and one of our Animal Ambassadors. Shelob's name is inspired by a monster in the form of a giant spider in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and was selected by guests at last weekend's Animal FUNd event.

This tarantula arrived at the museum in March and was hatched in 2021. They reach their full size at about 3-5 years old. We don't know yet if Shelob is a male or female; in captivity, males can live 5-10 years. Females can live 20-25 years.

They are named for the yellow color around their knee joints and can grow up to have a 7-8 inch leg span. Chaco Golden Knee Tarantulas are native to dry grasslands in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. They live in burrows they make, but can also be found in abandoned rodent or lizard burrows.

Thanks to all of our friends who visited last weekend to support our live animals!
